Christmastime at the Hotel Dupont, Wilmington DE

Too long ago I had my debutante party at the Hotel Dupont alongside four other debs. Today I’m still on the Holly Ball invite list with what appears to be a lifetime “complimentary invitation plus one.” (Addendum: Turns out these puppies expire after five years. God I’m old.) Why turn down a perfectly fine opportunity to wear a ball gown and dance around with some guy dressed as a penguin?

I look forward to this party every year. It’s not so much the dancing, or the dress, or the flowing booze that make it shine so brightly on my calendar. It’s the 2 am breakfast that is served when the band is too tired to keep playing and the dancers are too drunk to keep upright. There is every ingredient you need for a good old fashioned heartattack: bacon, eggs, biscuits and gravy, sausage links, scrapple (my personal favorite), pancakes, you name it. And as if that’s not enough, I typically order room service the next morning too. The Holly Ball sets the standard for holiday brunching. After this I’m usually set for pork products until New Years Day, just in time for a compulsory bowl of black-eyed peas with bacon for good luck in the coming year.

The Hotel itself still has an old ’70s glam feel with clean, spacious, and very comfortable rooms. You can order from a full room-service menu at any hour and there is even a bathtub-menu and a tub roomy enough for a couple with a bucket of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. It’s just how luxury hotels used to be, before cheap but highly stylized rooms appeared on the market and over the top $1000+ rooms became so ubiquitous.
